Marine Pollution in the Caribbean: Not a Minute to Waste

This report provides an assessment of the status and impacts of marine pollution in the Caribbean and provides recommendations to enhance the region’s resilience as it steers toward the Blue Economy. The report compiles data and findings on marine pollution from a variety
of sources and publications to provide meaningful guidance to policy and decision makers in the WCR, especially Caribbean SIDS and donor partners supporting the post-2015 Sustainable Development Agenda. It highlights the major socio-economic, health, and ecological impacts of marine pollution, and provides an assessment of the main marine pollutants in the region including marine and coastal litter, untreated wastewater, and agricultural run-off. Industrial pollution and waste from shipping are not widely documented in the region but potentially important, and thus are included in the report. The main regional policy frameworks, initiatives and programs relevant to marine pollution management are also described, followed by a 12-point agenda for addressing the challenges in support of a strong and productive Caribbean Blue Economy.

Marine Spatial Planning – A step-by-step Approach towars ecosystem based management

During recent years, marine spatial planning (MSP) has been the focus of considerable interest throughout the world, particularly in heavily used marine areas. MSP offers countries an operational framework to maintain the value of their marine biodiversity while at the same time allowing sustainable use of the economic potential of their oceans. essentially, MSP is an approach that can make key components of ecosystem-based management of marine areas a reality.

The guide provides a comprehensive overview of MSP. it focuses on describing a logical sequence of steps that are all required to achieve desired goals and objectives for marine areas. it does not focus on the technical details of any one of the steps, e.g., it is not intended to be a guide on the development of a marine geographic information system or implementation of a performance monitoring system. When available, references to existing technical guides, handbooks, and websites are referenced in the text.

Marine Spatial Planning on the Caribbean Island of Montserrat: Lessons for data-limited Small Islands

This Document Present and overview of the implementation of the Marine Spatial Planning on the Caribbean island of Monserrat Montserrat that presents an interesting case study of MSP in the small island context as it has ocean uses that are common to many islands, namely small-scale fisheries and tourism, but the marine environment has been heavily impacted due to volcanic activity. We detail the methods for data collection and analysis and the decision-making process that contributed to amarine spatial plan.

Mayreau Explorers Cooperative: Creating alternative livelihoods through vertical sea moss farming in the Tobago Cays Marine Park

This case study aims to enhance knowledge about innovations and best practices currently being utilised by civil society organisations (CSOs) and their partners in the Caribbean that can be applied to support conservation, restoration and sustainable use of coastal and marine resources in marine protected areas (MPAs) and marine managed areas (MMAs). It has been developed under the regional project ‘Powering Innovations in Civil Society and Enterprises for Sustainability in the Caribbean’ (PISCES) which is being funded by the European Union EuropeAid programme and implemented over a three-year period (2017 to 2020). PISCES is taking place in ten countries: Antigua and Barbuda; The Bahamas; Dominica; Grenada; Haiti; Jamaica; Saint Kitts and Nevis; Saint Lucia; Saint Vincent and the Grenadines; and Trinidad and Tobago.
