Rapid Review of Achievements of The CLME+ Interim Coordination Mechanisms – Technical Report

A rapid review of the SAP-ICM and the Fisheries -ICM has been conducted. This review is based on minutes of ICM meetings and achievements, and lessons learned, identified by the Intergovernmental Organisations (IGOs) that are members of the ICMs. The scope of this review was broadened to understand the precursor activities to the ICMs that has been undertaken by the UNDP/GEF projects and their Project Co-ordination Unit (PCU).

Realising the potential of the Outermost Regions for sustainable blue growth

This study aims at contributing to the implementation of the Integrated Maritime Policy in the nine Outermost Regions (ORs) of the European Union (Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, Réunion, Mayotte, Saint-Martin, Madeira, the Azores and Canary Islands) and their related sea basins (Caribbean-Amazonia, south-west Indian Ocean and Macaronesia). Its main purpose is to identify opportunities for sustainable growth in the blue economy (Blue Growth) in each of the basins, by covering four main areas: the state of play, e identification of potential new maritime activities, a gap analysis of required skills, the provision of up-to-date insights and evidence on the new growth potential.

Recommendation WECAFC/XVII/2019/11 “On the management of shrimp and groundfish resources of the north Brazil – Guianas Shelf in the WECAF area”

Most WECAFC members have endorsed the Caribbean and North Brazil Shelf Large Marine Ecosystem (CLME+) Strategic Action Programme (SAP) and that under its Strategy 6 “Implement EBM/EAF of the Guianas-Brazil continental shelf with special reference to the shrimp and groundfish fishery” the same members are required to “Strengthen the FAO-WECAFC-CRFM sub-regional arrangement for the management of the shrimp and groundfish fisheries, and establish a decision-making capacity for policy formulation and management”. It is within this context that WECAF issued a series of recommendations reaffirming its commitments to coordinate efforts to improve the sustainability of these fisheries.

Recommendation WECAFC/XVII/2019/9 “ON THE MANAGEMENT OF CARIBBEAN SPINY LOBSTER IN THE WECAFC AREA”

Series of recommendation on the management of Caribbean spiny lobster in the WECAFC Area. This recommendation recalls that most WECAFC members have endorsed the Caribbean and North Brazil Shelf Large Marine Ecosystem (CLME+) Strategic Action Programme (SAP), including SAP Sub-Strategy 4A, which aims at facilitating the adoption and implementation of an ecosystem approach to the Caribbean spiny lobster fisheries, and RECALLING the inclusion under the UNDP/GEF CLME+Project of dedicated financing to support the implementation of the aforementioned SAP Sub-Strategy

Reconstruction of larval origins based on genetic relatedness and biophysical modeling

This study investigated for the first time the fine-scale temporal genetic variability of new settlers and their origins in a benthic marine organism with one of the longest pelagic larval phases, the Caribbean spiny lobster (Panulirus argus).

Recreational Fisheries Economic Impact Assessment Manual And Its Application in Two Study Cases In The Caribbean: Martinique And Bahamas

The paper presents a manual to assess the economic impact of recreational fisheries and its application in two Caribbean countries: The Bahamas and Martinique. The manual was developed with the assistance from the Gertner Consulting Group and the WECAFC/OPESCA/ CRFM/ CFMC working group on recreational fisheries. This manual is intended to help countries better understand the size and contributions from recreation fishing to their economies. The results are meant to explain the economic impacts at the national and regional level.
