CARIPES Quantification of ecosystem services provided by marine protected areas in the Caribbean with a view to their payment
Descripción breve:The project aims to increase fishermen’ support to MPAs and to actively involve them in the conservation efforts and in the sustainable use of the marine resources of Caribbean MPAs. The assessment can be used to develop a system of payment for ecosystem services and establish a transfer of money from the users towards the fishermen. The establishment of a scheme of payment for ecosystem services within a marine protected area project in Martinique and in two MPAs in Saba and the British Virgin Islands aims to promote such efforts by establishing a fund transfer from the users towards the fishermen. Beyond the financial aspects, the implementation of such a process intends to change the image related to the world of fisheries: rather than being considered as a destructive force of the marine environment, it would be seen as the guardian of its good health. The project is developing avenu... ues in this direction so that the traditional knowledge of the fishermen is valued. It may also mark the stages for the implementation of payments for ecosystem services in MPAs in coastal areas in the Caribbean and in other parts of the world Read More

Conserving Biodiversity and reducing habitat degradation in Protected Areas and their Buffer Zones
Descripción breve:The project will enable the legal establishment of five new PAs (two terrestrial and three marine) and the operationalization of these sites as well as the two existing terrestrial PAs that currently have no management. In so doing, the project will expand the PA system from two terrestrial sites totalling 5,260 hectares without any effective management, to four terrestrial sites totalling 8,810 hectares and three marine sites totalling 11,693 hectares, all of which will be actively managed. It will support: assessments of the current state (biodiversity, ecosystem functions, resource uses, etc.) of the proposed PA units: the gazetting, boundary setting and zoning of the new PA units; the preparation of management plans for each PA Unit, as well as a strategic business plan for the overall PA system; and the establishment and capacity building of PA staff at the system and site levels, a... as well as capacity building and collaboration with NGO, CSO and private sector partners. It will also assist the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis in establishing, staffing and equipping a Protected Areas Agency, the first government unit dedicated to protected areas in the country’s history, which will oversee and manage the overall PA system as well as the specific PA units. The revision and updating of key laws and regulations to support PA management, the establishment of inter-institutional and multi-stakeholder coordination and information sharing mechanisms; and the creation and operation of sustainable financing mechanisms and business planning strategies will all be strengthened Read More

Pop-Up Nursery and Coral Restoration: To restore Elkhorn coral populations in a low biodiversity reef area within the Bonaire National Marine Park (BNMP) boundaries and increase species abundance and genotypic diversity
Descripción breve:A “pop-up” coral nursery will be set on site and removed at the end of the project allowing, in 8 months, for the propagation of 700 corals of 14 different genotypes, ready for transplantation. The restoration area of approximately 500m2 will be monitored using recently developed 3D modelling technology to quantify several measures of coral growth, abundance and health through an easy-to-use and non-intrusive tool. The monitoring protocol and collected data will be shared with the BNMP and coral restoration projects in the Caribbean to spark the future development of a feasible and standardized monitoring protocol. This is a BEST 2 initiative project.

Improving the management of the invasive lionfish (Pterois volitans) by determining movement patterns and depth preference
Descripción breve:The overall goal of the project is to identify new ways to limit the ecological and economic impacts of invasive lionfish both locally and regionally. Acoustic tags were surgically implanted in 30 lionfish during the first of two tagging phases. tagging have strong site fidelity and are not moving great distances on the continuous deep reef wall. They are staying with 200m horizontally of where they were first tagged. However, many lionfish are making regular vertical movements to depths beyond recreational dive limits. lionfish appear to be subject to predation from native predators at rates much higher than previously suspected. Acoustic data indicates that between (14-32%) of tagged lionfish were preyed upon up to 3 months post-tagging. Nurse sharks are thought to be the primary predator, as the project team encountered difficulties with these native predators on numerous tagging dive... es. Data gathered from these tags regarding horizontal and vertical movement patterns of these lionfish will inform future management plans. This is a BEST 2 initiative project Read More

Scaling-up Efforts to Rehabilitate Threatened Coral Communities Using Recruits Reared from Wild-caught Gametes
Descripción breve:Developing a tile that can be seeded with coral recruits and quickly and cheaply reintroduced to degraded reefs. The tile designs will be tested in a field setting with various coral species and under different environmental conditions. This is a long-term rearing of this critically endangered coral species, and shows that early outplanting of sexually reared coral settlers can be more cost-effective than the traditional approach of nursery rearing for restoration efforts aimed at rehabilitating coral populations. This a BEST 2 initiative project.
