These International Guidelines for the Management of Deep-sea Fisheries in the High Seas were developed at the request of the Committee on Fisheries (COFI) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), at its twenty-seventh session (March 2007), in order to assist States and regional fisheries management organizations and arrangements (RFMO/As) in sustainably managing deep-sea fisheries and in implementing the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Resolution 61/105, paragraphs 76-95, concerning responsible fisheries in the marine ecosystem
