Best of sharks and rays in Saint-Barths: To improve the knowledge on sharks and rays and their conservation status in Saint Barthélemy and inform the adjustment of existing, and development of new conservation measures

Brief Description:

Fieldwork using Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV), including a new technique to observe pelagic species, will be complemented with fishermen and dive centre surveys on the species’ socio-economic role. Through stakeholder consultations an adapted action plan for sharks and rays will be developed on the basis of the new knowledge and identify the required adjustments and additions to the existing regulations to protect these species. Communication activities - including a short documentary - will raise awareness about the project, demonstrate the importance for actions to protect sharks and rays and foster community involvement and support. This is a BEST 2 initiative project.

El trabajo de campo utilizando videos submarinos remotos con cebo (BRUV), incluida una nueva técnica para observar especies pelágicas, se complementará con encuestas de pescadores y centros de buceo sobre el papel socioeconómico de la especie. A través de consultas con las partes interesadas, se desarrollará un plan de acción adaptado para tiburones y rayas sobre la base de los nuevos conocimientos e identificará los ajustes necesarios y las adiciones a las regulaciones existentes para proteger estas especies. Las actividades de comunicación, incluido un breve documental, aumentarán la conciencia sobre el proyecto, demostrarán la importancia de las acciones para proteger a los tiburones y rayas y fomentarán la participación y el apoyo de la comunidad.
