CARI’ MAM Caribbean Marine Mammals Preservation Network - “Caring for Marine Mammals”
Brief Description:The Caribbean biodiversity is remarkable thanks to its abundance as much as of its high endemism. The great richness of the regional marine fauna and particularly marine mammals is of ecological, cultural and economic importance for the Wider Caribbean Region (WCR). This rich biodiversity is also threatened and the WCR is one of the two regions in the world that has experienced the extinction of a marine mammal species (the Caribbean monk seal). The Agoa Sanctuary (named after a Caribbean - Native American sea goddess) was established because of the abundance and diversity of cetacean species present in the waters of the French Caribbean islands. 24 of the world’s approximately 80 identified cetacean species have been observed here. The presence of these species has generated a constantly growing whale watching business, a powerful global tourism activity. There is a fine line to work across the Caribbean and internationally, to reconcile the protection of these animals and their promotion for the development of sustainable ecotourism business. The aim of the project CARI’MAM, financed by European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) Interreg funds and led by the Agoa Sanctuary, is to form a network of marine protected areas dedicated to marine mammal conservation in the Wider Caribbean region and beyond. The project also targets capacity-building for managers, development of common management and assessment tools, and support for the development of wildlife-friendly and sustainable whale-watching business across the Caribbean. The network of managers, called “CARI’MAM”, include partners from all around the Wider Caribbean region.Lead Organization: Agoa Sanctuary (French Biodiversity Agency)Donor: ERDF/Interreg (EU)Project ID: EUGeographic Scope: Multicountry (regional)Project Status: OngoingLast Update: 09/04/2020

ISLANDS Implementing Sustainable Low- and Non-Chemical Development in Small Island Developing States
Implementación de Desarrollo Sostenible Bajo y No Químico en Pequeños Estados Insulares en DesarrolloBrief Description:Waste management is an issue of increasing importance for island nations globally, with growing populations, rapid development and increasing amounts of imported goods all putting pressure on SIDS to safely manage and dispose of toxic and polluting substances. Because of their low economic growth, high density and significant environmental vulnerabilities, however, many countries in the Caribbean lack the capacity to sustainably manage increasing waste production. Under the Programming Directions for the 7th funding cycle of the Global Environment Facility (GEF 7), a specific allocation was made for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) for chemicals and waste management. The programme entitled ISLANDS was approved by the GEF Council in June 2019. The global program seeks to address the sound management of chemicals and waste through strengthening the capacity of sub-national, national and regional institutions, strengthening the enabling policy and regulatory framework in these countries and unlocking resources to implement sound management of chemicals and waste. This will be achieve through 4 components: 1) preventing future build-up of chemicals in the SIDS environment; 2) safe management and disposal of existing, historically produced wastes posing an immediate risk to people and natural resources; 3) promoting systems for future management of wastes and chemicals entering SIDS by adopting and putting into practice 3R approaches including increased recovery of resources from wastes by adopting the principles of sustainable consumption and production; 4) sharing knowledge and experience across all regions to address issues common to all SIDS and to stimulate inter regional cooperation to combat major global level challenges posed by wastes such as plastics, electronics and other major pollutants. Lead Organization: Basel Convention Regional Centre for the CaribbeanDonor: Global Environment FacilityProject ID:Geographic Scope: Multicountry (regional)Project Status: OngoingLast Update: 31/03/2020

EU/WWF MSP for the NBSLME Promoting Integrated and Participatory Ocean Governance in Guyana and Suriname: the Eastern Gate to the Caribbean
Brief Description:This project was officially launched in July 2017. This four-year project is funded by the EU and covers the coastal and marine areas of Suriname and Guyana. The project is implemented through a partnership between WWF Guianas, Green Heritage Fund Suriname (GHFS), Guyana’s Protected Areas Commission (PAC) and the Nature Conservation Division (NCD) of the Suriname Forest Service (‘s Lands Bosbeheer). The project aims to significantly enhance the governance and protection of marine and coastal resources of Guyana and Suriname through collaborative processes with all ocean stakeholders, improved knowledge of the coastal and marine environment, enhanced capacity of key stakeholders and informed marine spatial management. It will contribute to substantial progress towards achieving Aichi targets 4, 6, 10, 11 and 14 under the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD). This project will use a participatory approach to develop comprehensive and visually appealing spatial data that will fill critical information gaps, and facilitate informed decision-making regarding marine management and protection. This participatory approach to marine decision-making will increase the knowledge of the marine environment and related human uses of the marine environment amongst all participating stakeholders by allowing information to be available to everyone. An Equivalence-Gap Analysis for indigenous peoples (IP) and gender will ensure equity and participation of these marginalized groups, and that their needs are explicitly addressed in the decision-making process of this project. The participatory approach in its entirety builds stakeholder capacity and highlights the important role stakeholders can and should play in marine governance. Increased marine protection and strengthened governance through participatory spatial planning, targeted capacity building, and compelling data, will demonstrate that MSP can produce “win-win” outcomes that conserve biodiversity and enhance food security, protect livelihoods and support socio-economic development compatible with ocean health.Lead Organization: WWF GuianasDonor: EUProject ID:Geographic Scope: Multicountry (regional)Project Status: OngoingLast Update: 27/11/2020
